2018 Chapter 1 Wrap-up

Hey guys,

So the end of January is here and I have had a really good start to the year.

I am writing this blog post on the 29th so there is a chance that I will get a little more completed, however I will add these to the February wrap up and let you know.

So, at the moment I have completed 13 books; of these books there are 2 that I read as audiobooks. I have had a really good reading month and I hope that it continues through the rest of the year.

I have started tracking all different elements of my reading and I am happy with how it shows January. I have read a total of 5087 pages, averaging roughly 160 pages a day. Of these 13 books, 11 books were fantasy and 2 of them were graphic novels; I read 2 children’s/ middle-grade books, 3 adult novels, and 8 young adult novels.

The best books I have read this month is The Diabolic by S.J Kincaid, a clear five star read and I cannot wait until I can get my sticky mitts on The Empress. I found myself wanting more and even after reading more books after this one, I was thinking about the characters. Followed closely by The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, the final book I have completed this month.

The ‘worst’ book I read this month was one of the graphic novels I read this month; The Amulet: Stonekeeper. I found myself browsing over the pages because the art and the story didn’t really hold me, I don’t know whether it was because the start of the series or because I was tired when I read it. I did give this 3 stars but I don’t think I will be continuing the series.

Okay, on to some more stats, because I love stats. About the authors, I have read 11 white authors and 2 authors who were people of colour; something I plan on working on more over the next year- however it was difficult as I am currently only reading from a small selection of my TBR and unfortunately at the moment I don’t own that many from POC and I plan on rectifying this when I finally break my book buying ban.

I read 3 books from authors from Europe, 1 book from South America and the rest from North America. Again, this is something I plan on changing more throughout the year. I did, however, manage to finally read a book in translation.

I did purchase 6 books this month, however, I did not pay anything for these; mainly thanks to the free credits I have collected through audible (since I didn’t know I got one every month and haven’t been using them) and free kindle books. I have learnt to appreciate audiobooks this month, so I have ‘purchased’ some of my larger fantasy books in audiobook format so I can make slow but steady progress on books that I wouldn’t be able to otherwise.

I have done some writing this month, where I have been doing short story pieces almost weekly (okay, I did miss a week) however I have found myself mulling over one and have decided to expand it into a short story.

So, my plan for the next month is a simple one.

I want to read at least 10 books next month, I have set out a TBR trying to make another dent in my physical TBR. I plan on continuing with a few series; The Way of the Kings by Brandon Sanderson, The Lightbringer Series by Brent Weeks, The Magnus Chase Series by Rick Riordan, and The Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes.

Overall, I am really happy with the first chapter of 2018 and hope that the second is just as well.

How has your first chapter been? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Hi All,

For those who are interested, I did manage to get another book finished between writing this post and is being published. I finally (and I mean finally because I started this in 2016) finished ‘the final empire’ by Brandon Sanderson, the first book in the Mistborn Trilogy. I have been working on this book for so long that now I have finished it, I just want to get right in to the next two books!

So in the end, I managed to read/ finish 16 books in January, a total of 6546 pages.

Here’s to a good second chapter!
